Pickleball Paddles

Pickleball is a sport that’s very easy to get into. With its straightforward rules and a welcoming atmosphere that values both enjoyment and a bit of friendly competition, it’s a game anyone can start playing quickly.

However, having the right equipment is key, and nothing is more essential than choosing a good pickleball paddle.

There are three main play styles in pickleball. We’ll break them down to help you pick the right paddle for each approach. Additionally, we'll discuss two special categories of players.

Control Play: If your strategy revolves around precision and placing the ball exactly where you want, choose a paddle designed for control. Look for these features:

  • Shorter handle
  • Wider face
  • Carbon surface material
  • Thicker core for better touch

Balanced Play: If your game is a mix of power and finesse, you'll want a paddle that offers both. A balanced style calls for:

  • Standard or mid-length handle
  • Paddle shape of your choice
  • Hybrid paddle surface
  • Medium core for a blend of speed and control

Power Play: If your goal is to hit the ball hard and keep your opponents on their heels, you’ll need a paddle built for power. Look for these characteristics:

  • Longer handle for leverage
  • Elongated paddle face
  • Fiberglass surface for more force
  • Thinner core for faster action

For Beginners: When starting out, it’s a good idea to try a variety of paddles to figure out your preferred style. A balanced paddle is often a solid choice while you’re learning the game and developing your technique.

For Kids: When selecting a paddle for younger players, it’s important to focus on the grip size and weight. A paddle that’s too heavy or has a handle that’s too long can cause strain. Choose a lightweight paddle with a shorter handle for young players to ensure a comfortable experience.
